A Conversation for STEM Students

In Lost In Thought, Zena Hitz explores some of the ways that learning can become a tool to be used in the pursuit of status, wealth, justice, or other social ends. Though Hitz writes from the perspective of the humanities broadly and philosophy specifically, the ideas she introduces touch on scientific work in both explicit and implicit ways.

Join Prof. Karl van Bibber (UC Berkeley, Engineering) and Elliot Rossomme (UC Berkeley, Chemistry) in a conversation about finding space for the contemplative in the course of scientific research. We will consider the ways that scientists face similar and dissimilar pressures to scholars in the humanities, together asking whether, why, and how these factors contribute to or detract from scientific pursuits and the work of the inner life.
