THE MORAL FORMATION OF THE TECHNOLOGIST
Training Ethical Engineers for a New Era
A Dinner Talk with Prof. Karl van Bibber and Prof. Raluca Scarlat
With the technology landscape changing at warp speed today — the explosive pace of AI, the power of genome editing to redesign the human race, etc. — one might hold little hope of ever even constructing new moral frameworks in which to address these topics, much less develop broadly accepted societal norms in a timely way. In the face of this, however, our premier research universities are doing their best to equip the next generation of scientists, engineers and technologists with a moral compass to navigate the evolving challenges. This evening's panel discussion brings together two Berkeley faculty who teach eight hundred undergraduates a year to discuss the intersection of ethics and technology pedagogy. Professor van Bibber and Professor Scarlat will share their observations and experiences in the ethical formation of engineers today.
This event is open to the general public. Dinner will be provided. RSVP is required.
